BpNichol - First Screening

In 1983/4, Canadian poet BpNichol used an Apple IIe computer and the Apple BASIC programming language to create First Screening, a suite of a dozen programmed, kinetic poems.

The Apple IIe soon became obsolete and the poems became essentially inaccesible.

In 1992, four years after the death of BpNichol, a student at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, began creating a Hypercard version of First Screening.

In 1993, it was published on a 3.5" floppy disk for the Macintosh computer.

HARUN FAROCKI

Against What? Against Whom?

Currently on at Raven Row:

Farocki is a German filmmaker, artist and writer.

His film essays explore the production and perception of images and decode the medium of film.

The exhibition at Raven Row is a survey of Farocki's multi-screen film installations.

Wicked Witch/Dizzy K/Sensations Fix/Ippu Do

stumbled across both of these via the 'legon flutes' mixes by the brilliantly named DJ BongoMan of the band Buffle who played at colour out of space festial. Wicked Witch is, or was from Washington DC and is ridiculously horrible, but amazing and Dizzy K Falola, was a Nigerian disco star and is now the head pastor of Power Church International on the Old Kent Road. Go check him out, I bet he still kicks it.

Wicked Witch - Fancy Dancer

Wicked Witch - Under Your Spell

Dizzy K Falola - Yes, I Love You

Also brilliant is this incredible Italian prog-rock band Sensations Fix. Just unassailable, hazy, synth-god, mustache-on-a-mountain-top, long, untamed hair in the wind, guitar solo trouser bulge in leather pants, bristling chest hair joy. This track, "Fragments of Light" is from the LP of the same name, available in full from the brilliant Mutant Sounds blog. check out how small i made the youtube player.

keeping somewhat on a theme, look at ippu-do's version of 'time of the season'. underwater guitar solo's and shit. amazing. the video is almost good enough to distract me from how much I hate the zombies. but not quite. more later anyway.

x

Let my heart start moving
Slowly slowly slowly
You take care of it

You've shown me that love is magic
My eyes dream of you day and night

Let my heart start moving

You take care of it
Slowly slowly slowly.

I breathe your perfume
Your eyes are addictive

Androgynous and Frankensteinian Appeal

"'Michael Jackson is a solitary mutant, precursor of a mixing of the races which will be perfect because universal, of the new post-racial race, so to speak. The children today have no hangups about the idea of a mixed-race society; such a society is their world and Michael Jackson prefigures what they think of as an ideal future' (Alain Soral).
It must also be pointed out that Michael Jackson has had his face rebuilt, his hair straightened, his skin lightened - in short, that he has constructed himself in every tiny detail. It is this which makes him a pure, innocent child - the artificial androgyne of the fable, who, better than Christ, can reign over the world and bring reconciliation, because he is better than the child-god: he is a prosthesis-child, an embryo of all the forms of mutation we have imagined to deliver us from race and sex." Jean Baudrillard, Cool Memories

The Launderette Party Photography Exposition

Documentation of our inaugural Surfing|Swimming Launderette Party was various and fragmentary. Here are compiled a selection of those photographs which we consider to be evocative of the occasion.

After lengthy deliberation, we decided to award prizes to Riyo Nemeth and Anon* for their photographs; each will receive a 36-Exposure roll of Kodak 'Color Plus' camera film.

First prize, however, goes to this stunning photograph, taken by Nabihah Iqbal:

For her efforts, Nabihah has won a yellow plastic ‘Focus Free’ handheld camera.

*We must now graciously request the agent of this photograph to come forward.

Instead it is about a new short mix.

William Bennett and DJ BENETTI

William Bennett formed Whitehouse alone in 1980. In 1982, Philip Best, then aged fourteen, ran away from home to join him.

This
is Whitehouse performing together in 1984.

Whitehouse later became known for rubbing their nipples and barking like rabid dogs over digital white noise. They are unanimously revered by noise and industrial kids who wear throbbing gristle t-shirts and have greasy, dandruff-flecked hair.

At some point, William Bennett became DJ BENETTI.

DJ BENETTI played at Visions Video bar in Dalston last night. I didn’t go, couldn’t face the journey.

As much for my own pleasure as for that of the readers’, here is a recent mix by DJ BENETTI.

Ron Hardy

Ron Hardy played Disco, Electro and House during the '80s in Chicago.
He Hardy played records backwards and Stevie Wonder at +8.
Ron Hardy died in 1991.

The Ragtyme track manages to create a track that is both minimal and overblown.
The First Choice mix displays Hardy's reportedly 'wild' and 'raw' style of Mixing.

Fuck macho dubstep: listen to Marcus Nasty.

We're bored and disappointed by endless tawdry wibble wobble sets. Evil bass is boring.

These mixes from the excellent Rinse FM podcast archive are as good a cheap and effortless introduction to Funky House (London style) as any.

Good afternoon,

Here is a mix originally played at the Jacuzzi Funk night in Elephant & Castle. It fell stillborn from the speakers then, but hopefully it will fare better in mp3 form.

At 45 minutes it is adequate for an average journey across London or a lengthy supper preparation.

I hope you enjoy this blend of Italo and Electro, old classics and new gems, mixing proficiency and slap dash adjustments and of dulcet tones and piercing pitches.

Thank-you for your time.
